In 2010, the year Gen Vijay Kumar Singh took over as the chief of the world’s third largest army, a report in the American magazine Rolling Stone ended the military career of Gen Stanley McChrystal, then commander of the US forces in Afghanistan. The picturing of the reckless general openly mocking the US president and the secretaries of state and defence led inevitably to McChrystal’s resignation. The profile headline—The Runaway General—said it all. (Curiously, the author of the piece, Michael Hastings, who was embedded with the US forces in Afghanistan, died in a car crash earlier this year. He was 33.)
