After the Election Commission froze the "two leaves" symbol of AIADMK following a rift in the party after party supremo’s death, the two factions led by former chief minister O Pannerselvam and Jayalalithaa’s aide Sasikala have adopted different party names and symbols.
The O. Panneerselvam faction, which will now be called "AIADMK Puratchi Thalaivi Amma", has been allotted "electric pole" symbol. And the Sasikala group has been christened as "AIADMK Amma" and its symbol would be "hat".
It’s deja vu for the party which split in 1988 following the death of its leader MG Ramachandran, and the two factions led by Jayalalithaa and his wife Janaki Ramachandran were allotted two live symbols of "rooster" and "two pigeons" respectively by the election commission.
This time, voters of Jayalalithaa’s R.K. Nagar constituency will miss a familiar "two leaves"symbol on the EVM when they vote during a bypoll on April 12 to fill the vacancy caused by her death.
