Secure Travel: Master Moves

  • State-of-the-art automatic explosive detection systems for X-ray monitors at all 54 important airports by December
  • Ultra-sensitive hand-held metal detectors to be in place for physical search of passengers
  • Thorough manual checking in addition to X-ray screening of both hand baggage and checked-in luggage
  • Entry of visitors to be banned at airports
  • Domestic passengers to check in 90 minutes before departure. It is three hours for international passengers, and four hours for those headed to UK or US.
  • Only one piece of hand baggage, including laptop, to be allowed on domestic flights. Cellular phones, cameras and other electronic gadgets must be in checked-in luggage. As of now, no hand baggage for US- and UK-bound flights.
  • All liquid substances, including water, gels and pastes, shampoos, beverages, toothpaste and lotions, not allowed in hand baggage or on person. Screening of passengers carrying such substances to continue even if the ban is lifted.
  • Only infant foods, inhalers and medicines, with proper prescriptions, allowed in transparent bags
  • Increase in CISF personnel, including those in plain clothes, at airports. More sky marshals on sensitive flights.
  • Light-machine gun-mounted mobile patrols to be deployed in non-operational areas of major airports. Quick reaction teams, bomb disposal squads, sniffer dogs to be kept on call.
