Drone attacks targeting the Srinagar airport classified as a defence airport and the Awantipora air base were successfully foiled late Friday night, according to officials. Explosions were also reported from Jammu and various parts of south Kashmir.
The incident occurred a day after India intercepted a Pakistan military attempt to strike Indian defence facilities using drones and missiles.
In Baramulla district, the night sky lit up as Indian forces brought down Pakistani drones. Similar drone sightings were reported over Jammu, Samba, and Pathankot in Punjab, with military units actively responding to the threats.
Residents in Srinagar were urged via mosque loudspeakers to turn off their lights as a safety precaution. Authorities confirmed that drones were also engaged over Udhampur and Nagrota in Jammu and parts of Punjab.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a post on X, "Intermittent sounds of blasts, probably heavy artillery, can now be heard from where I am." He also posted a picture of the city in darkness, captioning the post as, "Blackout in Jammu now. Sirens can be heard across the city." In another post, he said,"It's my earnest appeal to everyone in and around Jammu please stay off the streets, stay at home or at the nearest place you can comfortably stay at for the next few hours. Ignore rumours, don't spread unsubstantiated or unverified stories and we will get through this together."
