Shrill melodrama and simplistic posturing. This musical fails musically

here’s only one promising moment in Jashnn that plays out rather innocuously. It’s when Shahana goes ballistic about not wanting to lead a banal middle-class life; she’s used to a life of riches, which comes to her in return for being a millionaire’s uncomplaining mistress. Such dubious compromising and moral vacuity, the hallmark of the Bhatt clan’s films, could have given an edgy touch, but the director duo prefer to just skim the surface. The shades of grey get washed away in shrill melodrama and simplistic posturing.
Shahana and Adhyayan are siblings living in a lovely house complete with a pool and located by the sea, yet they are curiously poor. Adhyayan dreams of becoming a rock star and faces many a hurdle in his journey. Things come to a head once he falls in love with the sister of Shahana’s millionaire lover and is forced to move out to a lovelier pad, that too by the sea. How do they manage to wrangle such picturesque deals despite utter penury, I wonder?
The second outing of Adhyayan, in a role tailormade for Emraan Hashmi, is colourless and unimpressive. Be it the angsty expressions or his unsure gait, he just can’t seem to get the act right. Humayun Saeed is an expressionless wonder and undergoes the most unconvincing change of heart for a villain in the history of Hindi cinema. Amidst such mediocrity Shahana’s earnest, powerful performance seems pointless. Besides, the lady needs to seriously overhaul her wardrobe. However, the biggest blunder of this musical is that it fails musically, with, perhaps only one song, Aaya Re, that’s worth a listen.
