Bittoo Boss

Interesting social observations don’t necessarily a good film make

I
t begins promisingly enough with quirky vignettes of Anandpur in Punjab. Where a young girl, despite a cloistered life, is liberated enough to steal a smoke under the bridge and furtively kiss a boy at a wedding. Where the most important person at a wedding is neither the groom nor the bride, but the video-wala. Wedding dates can be changed and ceremonies can be held up to accommodate him. We are introduced to wedding video-maker Bittoo, who has ambitions of making his own film, till he decides to chase the shorter route to success.

The movie tries to capture the promiscuity and amorality in our lives, especially in the small towns. However, interesting social observations don’t necessarily a good film make. Nothing quite happens in the first half. Pre-interval, Bittoo feels like an overlong introduction to the cast—with all the action hastily packed into the second half.

There are interesting touches: Bittoo gifting his lady love a stepney cover. Then there is his father who is only heard and not seen in the first half. They could have persisted with that device. Pulkit is sincere, showing his acting skills and dancing chops. But he is too reminiscent of the rakish Ranveer Singh in Band Baaja Baraat.
