A 37-year-old man in Maharashtra lost Rs. 12 lakh in a crypto hack. The victim’s Bitcoin account was allegedly hacked by an unknown individual, who stole $15,097, or roughly Rs. 12 lakh, PTI reported.

An official from the local police station said that though the event occurred on November 1, 2022, the man only reported it to the authorities last week.

The police have now filed a case under Section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, and other relevant sections of the Information Technology Act.

According to the report, the victim, a resident of Kandivali in Mumbai, had travelled to Thane for business on November 1 when someone allegedly broke into his cryptocurrency account online and stole the money. After two months, the victim still had not provided a cause for filing the complaint, according to the police, adding that investigations are underway.

The criminal use of cryptocurrencies reached a record $20.1 billion in 2022, according to statistics from Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis, as transactions involving businesses subject to US sanctions increased sharply.

By July 2022, 700,000 users had signed up for the Gari wallet. One million token holders were registered on August 2, 2022, as the number of token holders continued its upward trend, and now it has surpassed the two million milestone.

“The two million user milestone is a testament to continuous adoption of the Chingari app among the new users. With the launch of our initiatives like video non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace, subscription plans, audio rooms, and Gari mining, users now have access to a wide range of options to monetise their content,” says Sumit Ghosh, CEO and co-founder, Chingari.

“We are passionate about enabling users and creators to benefit from the new tokenised economy, and Gari is at the core of our efforts. We are looking forward to the next phase of growth, as we plan to on-board the first one billion crypto users on the Chingari platform,” he adds.
