Hundreds of painstakingly chiselled man-made caves, some 450 of them, snake below the streets of Nottingham&rsquos city centre. Some of these hold Europe&rsquos most northerly cave art, e.g. on the limestone walls of Creswell Crags. Nottinghamshire&rsquos cave credentials run incredibly deep into the soft sandstone, dating back to the medieval era and earlier. The new Nottingham Cave Trail (cavesofnottingham.com) features a three-mile walk designed to give a special insight into what lies beneath, from decaying dungeons to breweries, cock-fighting pits and even houses.
