As an additional shock to the existing trend of tech layoffs, Google India has reportedly laid off 453 employees. As per a report, these Google layoffs have impacted staff across departments at the tech giant.

According to a report in businessline, an email was sent about Google India layoffs to all the affected employees by Sanjay Gupta, country head and vice president, Google India. In addition to this, the sackings at Google were said to have taken place late at night on Thursday.

Google India layoffs come just a few weeks after the parent company Alphabet Inc. announced that it would sack close to 12,000 employees or almost 6 per cent of its total staff. While back then the chief executive officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai did not exactly mention the names of departments that could see layoffs, he did mention that the company was also focussing more on artificial intelligence (AI).

Referring to Google layoffs, CEO Sundar Pichai also wrote an email to employees stating that he takes “full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.” As per the report, the CEO had also said, “We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices.”

On a closer look at the recent trend of mass layoffs, Google layoffs (even the ones in its India office) come just alongside Microsoft layoffs, Meta sacking, Twitter firings, Amazon layoffs and so on. As per experts, this trend, which started in 2022, is also expected to be seen in 2023 due to a global economic slowdown.
