Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to be a part of an exciting 4-day self-driving trail to coastal Maharashtra, as part of the ‘Wheels of Wander’ campaign by Maruti Suzuki Alto and Outlook Traveller. I was joined by Hersh, Sagar and Rushaad from Mumbai, three childhood friends who would get a chance to re-discover their friendship on this road trip. As thrilling it was to spend time with friends and have fun with new sights and experiences, we were all excited about the set of wheels that had to be driven. All of us love road trips, and feel that the car makes a big difference to the entire experience.
Our route was chalked from Pune to Tarkarli, wending through Harihareshwar, Ganpatipule and a number of villages enroute. The coastal stretch of Maharashtra is one of the most scenic drives of the country and offers a number of different landcsapes to traverse – from verdant green to red-soiled and muddy. We were to drive through the SH4, with surreal views of the Arabian Sea for company, with narrow country roads ascending and descending to make the journey more exciting.
Total Distance: 500km+
Time taken: 3 days
Travel tip: If short on time, Pune to Tarkarli can be reached in nearly 10 hours by following the National Highway 48, but for scenic views and the best of coastal Maharashtra, SH4 is recommended.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 was the ideal companion for this journey. Even though the roads are not smooth, the clearance of the car assured us that the ride would be great. On a few days, we drove till late evening on the bumpy roads. Despite that, we had no problems and felt completely safe and confident of not having any breakdowns on account of the bad roads.
Highway driving always requires more caution as there is other speeding traffic. The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is fitted with front airbags which makes the travellers feel safe. Other safety features of the car include central locking, fog lamps and good seatbelts, which are essential for driving.
Since the wheel was shared by mutliple people, no one got tired. Besides, the car is fitted with power steering which means that the arms have ample rest despite long distances. The Auto Gear Shift (AGS) made driving even smoother, without the hassle of manual change of gears.
The headroom, legroom and shoulder room was just perfect for all of us. All four of us fit easily in the car and had ample space in the boot for our stuff. After all it has 170 liters, which is great to keep enough things for a long trip. The car’s inside storage features in the door and dashboard are also of great help to keep small, handy things close by.
The economics of road trips are essential to planning a holiday when there is a group of young people travelling. The Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 gives a mileage of an astounding 24.07km/l on long drives. This was a big help in saving for fuel.
A long drive in the Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 is enjoyable and comfortable, thanks to its well thought out features. The music system, ample boot space, in-car storage in the doors and dashboard, along with power steering and AGS allows for a smooth drive to maneuver through various terrains.
The Maruti Suzuki Alto was the ideal companion on the road for a drive through coastal Maharashtra, ensuring that the trip was fun, safe and memorable.
