The collections at Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya can now be seen online

You can now explore Mumbai’s iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya from your couch. The 99-year-old museum is making its collections available online amid the pandemic. 

After 11 long months, Mumbai's Grade 1 heritage museum had reopened its doors to visitors on February 16. But with the rising number of cases, it has had to shut down again.

CSMVS houses nearly 50,000 artefacts, consisting of excavated artefacts from Harappan sites, sculptures from different eras, Indian miniature paintings, European paintings, porcelain and ivories from China and Japan, Natural history, coins, weapons, etc. The galleries are spread over the three-floor main building and the east-wing extension building. 

For starters, check out the Natural History galleries consisting of species such as the striped hyena, the black francolin, and Indian chameleons.

The Karl J. Khandalavala Gallery of Indian Artefacts where Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings from the 18th century is another treasure.

If you wondered about the fashion statements of the ancestors of our country then CSMVS can give you a glimpse of that too. Their collection of Indian jewelry, arms and armor, ancient costumes and textiles is your jam.

This is an opportunity for all history enthusiasts to explore the stunning collection of sculptures, manuscripts, and paintings from different centuries.

The museum will be introducing various museum halls through lectures, workshops, and art training till May 30.
