What does a holiday mean to you?
My job itself is a working vacation. I love my job—I could work every single day of my life! Sometimes people ask me, “don’t you want a holiday?” For me, making films is a vacation because I love doing it. I guess I have a very odd sense of what a vacation is. My job allows me to travel a lot, and I am lucky enough to have the means for it.
What are your favourite destinations?
Anything that has to do with the sea. And the mountains. If both exist together, even better. London is also one of my favourite cities, both for work and for a holiday. I love it and it’s a wonderful place to live in.
I have grown to love Japan as well—I have lost count the number of times I have been there. I hate to sound pompous and that isn’t my intention, but there is a Tom Cruise Day in Japan (October 10). So I love them as much as they love me.
Croatia also has a special place in my heart. Especially Hvar. It is beautiful. It’s a bewitching holiday destination with beautiful ocean views. Dubrovnik is also stunning. Mallorca in Spain is another island I love.
My favourite destinations are diverse, really. The Taj Mahal in India, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the beaches of Miami and Saint-Tropez—I love these places as much as I love Mount Fuji and the Rockies.
What do you like best about travelling?
I love travelling in itself. I have always dreamed of being able to travel to different places. It’s not just about one particular thing.
What do you enjoy most on holidays?
I love the excitement and adventure of a new place. I’m very active on my vacations. I run, swim, paraglide—anything that keeps me on my toes. But I also enjoy the simple things and I am not afraid to get in touch with my softer and more affectionate side. I am a total romantic. I like walking through parks, looking at monuments, going to museums. I like all that stuff. I also really love travelling to places that celebrate love or make me want to be in love. Other than that, meeting people and being part of their lives is also very intriguing. I remember I had a lot of fun in Taipei once, making my own dumplings at Din Tai Fung with the chefs and masters.
On a holiday, what do you splurge on?
Not splurge really. I don’t think I can do that sort of indulgence any more. But I do pick up souvenirs and reminders of places I go to. I think those would mostly be gadgets and tech. I also pick up a lot of vintage toys—models of vehicles, planes—especially stuff that is handcrafted.
The destinations on your wish list...
I’d love to see more of India, definitely. The northern part of India especially, from the Himalaya to Rajasthan. I also want to spend days lounging on boats in the backwaters. Argentina would be a good idea too.
