The best way to enjoy Durga Puja in Kolkata is to immerse yourself in the spirit of carnival cheer that takes over the city. You will find the streets filled with crowds, meandering their way through the lanes and bylanes, visiting aristocratic homes or the ‘bondei bari’ to the traditional ‘baroari’ or neighbourhood celebrations. Many prefer to go on a walking tour at night when the illuminations transform the city into a fantasy land. This is also the time when everyone is eager to meet family and friends over meals, and eating out is a major part of the celebration.
JW Marriott Kolkata has not only come up with an elaborate buffet spread for the Durga Puja revellers for lunch and dinner but also has a special midnight buffet for those who might be looking for a bite in the wee hours. Between October 15 and 19, JW Kitchen, the all-day dining restaurant at JW Marriott Kolkata, will serve a lunch and dinner menu, which will primarily consist of popular Bengali dishes.
Whet your appetite with some traditional savoury items such as ‘Echorer Chop’, ‘Mochar Chop’, ‘Piyaj Posto Bora’, ‘Gondhoraj Fish Tikka’, ‘Chanar Chop’, ‘Kasundi Fish Fry’ and ‘Narkol Posto Bora’.
Then delve into the mains, starting with ‘Ghee Bhaat’ and ‘Gondhoraj Masur Dal’. Unlike popular belief, Bengali cuisine has a wide range of vegetarian dishes. So try the ‘Aloo Chechki’, ‘Echorer Dalna’, ‘Aam Kasundi Paneer’, 'Koraishuti dhokar dalna', and ‘Paach Misali Tarkari’. For non-vegetarians, the menu includes ‘Kachalonka Murgi’, ‘Mutton Dakbanglow’, ‘Posto Murgi’, ‘Mutton Roganjosh’ and ‘Dhonepata Chicken’.
If you are fond of biryani, options include ‘Hilsa Biryani’ and ‘Kolkata Chicken Biryani’. Round up your meal on a sweet note. Take your pick from ‘Rasgulla’, ‘Gulab Jamun’ and other special sweet creations by the chefs.
As the city stays wide awake to the merriment of Durga Puja, a specially curated midnight menu will be available to appease the night-time cravings of pandal hoppers. A peek into the midnight buffet spread revealed dishes such as ‘Veg Biryani’, ‘Aam Dal’, ‘Bhaja Moong Dal’, ‘Mochar Ghonto’, ‘Paneer Kaliya’, etc. among the vegetarian spread and ‘Murgh Tariwala’, ‘Bhetkir Jhol’, ‘Rohu Kaliya’, ‘Sorshe Maachh’ and much more under the non-vegetarian spread.
