The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is roughly 38km long. Midway is Murodo , which has Japan's highest altitude hotel and transit station. In summers, adventure sports enthusiasts visit the Murodo hiking trails.

The ropeways and cable car stations in Takayama offer spectacular views of the Northern Alps. Things to do in Takayama include: travelling by cable car and ropeway for some of the best views in the Northern Alps; checking out the hiking trails of Shomyo Falls and Midagahara, and a visit to Kurobe Dam, one of Toyama's most ambitious constructions.

Another must-do activity would be a visit to Kurobe Gorge, known to be one of the deepest valleys in Japan. The forested ravine can be traversed through a spectacular ride via the Kurobe Kyokoku train.
