Hyderabadis take their food seriously. From mean chicken or mutton biryanis served with a spicy and robust gravy, buttery cookies prepared with generations-old recipes, to a generously plated mandi, the list of things to eat when in Hyderabad is never-ending. If you're visiting the city for the first time, be sure to brace yourself with a heavy appetite, for we've put together a hearty list of all the dishes you must try 

Malai Paaya, Nihaari And Naan

If you want to eat the breakfast of champions, then head to Hotel Nayaab, located in the bustling Ghansi Bazaar. The joint opens up as early as 4 a.m. to serve the best malai paaya (a spicy mutton stew prepared with goat trotter) and nihaari (mutton stew) prepared overnight. If your mornings are incomplete without a cup of tea, they are known to stir up a soothing blend of saffron-infused chai.  

Hyderabadi Biryani

It's been a while since Hyderabadi biryani has risen to fame. The ambrosial creation can be found in just about any city, no matter how far from its native place. Yet the best bite is tucked away in the busy bylanes of Hyderabad. The city's two favourite spots for Hyderabadi biryani are located in the cramped alleys of the old city. Choice Hotel, located near Salarjung Museum, is known to serve a subtly spiced version of the Hyderabadi biryani. Whereas Hotel Shadab, located just a few steps away in Madina Circle, dishes out a spicier version of the same.

Irani Chai and Osmania Biscuits 

A cup of strong, piping-hot tea with a side of buttery-soft biscuits to dunk in is the perfect way round of a meal in the old city. Nimrah Cafe and Bakery, located in Ghasi Bazaar, right next to Charminar, is the best place for a sip of Irani chai, along with Khara tea biscuits and Osmania biscuits. If you've got a little more appetite left, grab a bite of their lukhmi (a puff stuffed with minced meat). 

Jauzi Halwa

Prepared generously with ghee, dry fruits, wheat flour and sugar, a bite of jauzi halwa lingers on forever. This 100-year-old creation, hailing from Turkey, was also considered Nizam's favourite. Hameedi Confectionery, located in Mozamjahi market, is known to be the pioneer of this unique delicacy. Apart from the jauzi halwa, you must also try their hand-churned ice creams.
