Double-decker buses were originally launched in the 1920s in Kolkata, but they were gradually phased out by the 21st century. Much like trams, they are viewed as a remnant of colonial transportation with a rich historical background. Kolkata recently introduced the open double-decker buses again after almost three decades. These buses are specifically launched keeping in mind the crowd that gathers in the city during Durga Puja's festive fervour. Sometimes they run through winter season.
