Deserts cover nearly one-third of the earth’s surface. Deserts are often looked upon as wild, harsh places, but they have a beauty of their own. With advance planning, you can explore these stunning landscapes at ease.

The Sahara Desert

The Sahara Desert is one of the hottest deserts in the world. It is the third biggest desert after Antarctica and the Arctic deserts. Located in North Africa, it got its name from the Arabic word for desert. The temperature rises to dangerously high levels. It is too hot in the summer season, and at night, it becomes close to freezing.

The Gobi Desert

It is the fifth-largest desert in the world and one of the largest deserts in Asia. The Gobi Desert lies in the rain shadow zone of the Himalayas. It is located in northern and north-western China and southern Mongolia. This site is a delight for archaeologists as it is a fossil-rich area.

The Namib Desert

Seen as a coastal desert, the Namib Desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world. It has been around between 55 and 80 million years according to several studies. It covers countries like Namibia, Angola, and South Africa, and covers 2000km of the Atlantic Coast. One can see remnants of sea animals like whales and seal bones. Along with this, one can also see the marks of shipwrecks.

The Thar Desert

The Thar Desert lies along the north-western part of India, and is shared by Pakistan. In India, it largely covers Rajasthan, with some parts in Haryana, Punjab, and Gujarat. Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, and Bikaner are well-known tourist spots because of their traditional and cultural values.

The Atacama Desert

Regarded as the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert in South America is made up of salt lakes and sand. There are some regions in the desert that have never received any rain. It is a popular filming location too.
