"Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me"
~~Heal The World by Michael Jackson~~

Stop everything and think where would you be in the next 10 years. Probably still here and wondering why there has been no rain for the past year or so, or maybe busy paying unbelievably expensive hospital bills. It's not impossible you see, we drove our planet to such extent of misuse and abuse that in few years from now, cool breeze, birds chirping, gentle flow of the rivers...all these will be just in stories. This is what we have done to our planet Earth, our only home, so far. Can we make it a better place? A Herculean task for sure but of course we can. Now, if we can just stop for a while and try to understand where is this coming from, that would be a small but a positive start.

The environment we live in, is changing faster than we can even blink. And not towards the good path, if you were wondering. To help people everywhere get an understanding of our environment and changes that are occurring, we celebrate World Environment Day (WED) on June 5 every year. It is the United Nation's initiative to encourage awareness and protection of our environment. The first ever WED campaign was back in 1974 with the theme "Only One Earth". True, isn't it? We have only one Earth, our home, and we are not taking taking good care of it. From polluted oceans, global warming, human health, conservation of animals, there have been many global themes that got addressed during World Environment Day worldwide. Over 143 countries participate each year and there is one host country every year. Last year 2018 was hosted by India (Beat Plastic Pollution). This year it's China's turn and the theme for this year is Air Pollution

The day we stop breathing, we know where we will be, don't we? So why not invest our time and effort into making the air quality better? As a major step towards air quality control, this World Environment Day, focus will be on various governments, industries and us individuals to embrace environment-friendly technologies and renewable energy. Hope something really good gets imparted on World Environment Day.
Pristine backwaters of Kollam in KeralaNow speaking of air pollution, most Indian cities and towns are way beyond repair. But somewhere in the backwaters of Kerala sits the quaint city of Kollam with the prestigious title of world's cleanest air. Now that's something to be proud of.
