The feast after sunset is indeed a wonderful sight for the eyes after fasting the whole day. If you are a foodie like me, there are plenty of places in the country to go to if you crave delicious iftar dishes. From the north to the south, we bring you some Indian cities you can travel to to devour these delicacies.

Let’s start with Srinagar. Once the beating drums announce the time for the Sehri meal pre-dawn, one would look forward to the fast-breaking feast at sunset. Try the lanes near Hazratbal for the sweet-savoury combination of halwa-paratha. There’s also babribyol (basil seed drink) and gaev tchot (traditional bread with desi ghee) to experience here.

How can one not include Old Delhi in the list, right? Jama Masjid area is the place to be if you are a non-vegetarian. The first stop must be the legendary Karim’s and then hop on over to Al Jawahar for some chicken stew and bread. Kebabs, curries, sweat treats: you name what you crave and the area will have it. PS: Don’t forget to indulge in the Shahi Tukda found in the sweet shop opposite these restaurants.

Seekh kebabs anyone?

But of course. Lucknow’s old city has been the place for iftar delicacies for centuries. The lanes come alive in the night and the smells of delicious foods waft through the air. Fried dumplings or pakodas, fresh and dried fruits, nihari and paya, tunday kebabs (where else but here), there’s too much on offer. There’s no chance of you going home hungry.

Tunday kebabs must be high on your iftar list in Lucknow

Let’s not forget Zakaria Street in central Kolkata during iftar. From fried meats to murgh changezi, breads to kebabs, rosogollas to phirnis, you will be spoilt for choice. Then there are also the Mughlai staples found across the city like haleem, rezalas and biryani, found here with a boiled egg and potato. That makes all the difference.

You must head to the old city where the Charminar stands tall. Amidst perfumes and pearls, the one dish you must taste here is haleem, a meat delicacy cooked to perfection in lentils, barley and broken wheat. Then there’s Hyderabadi biryani of course along with plenty of other treats on offer. Try getting a seat at Hotel Shadab or Shah Ghouse. You will if you’re lucky!

So, where will you go?
