At the end of December, automakers Skoda, Hyundai and MG Motor reported an increase in their monthly car sales. At the same time, Toyota Kirloskar recorded a decrease in its dispatches to dealers and Maruti Suzuki saw a drop in total wholesale units in December compared to the prior month.  

The country’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) reported that overall wholesales decreased by 9 per cent in December 2022, from 1,39,347 units, compared to the same month the previous year. According to a statement from MSIL, the business sold 1,53,149 vehicles overall in the same month in 2021. 

"The shortage of electronic components had some impact on the production of vehicles, mainly in domestic models. The company took all possible measures to minimise the impact," MSIL said. 

Skoda Auto India recorded sales of 4,788 units, an increase of 48 per cent. According to a statement from the automaker, the company sold 3,234 units in December 2021. The statement added that in comparison to the 23,858 units sold in 2021, sales for the calendar year 2022 increased by over twofold to 53,721 units. 

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) recorded total sales of 57,852 units, an increase of 18.2 per cent. As per a statement released by HMIL, the company sold 48,933 units in December 2021. Domestic sales increased last month by 20.2 per cent to 38,831 units from 32,312 units in the same month last year. The company’s exports grew by 14.4 per cent to 19,021 units in December 2022 from 16,621 units the previous month. 

MG Motor reported that retail sales increased by 53 per cent to 3,899 units in December 2022. In the same month in 2021, the company had sold 2,550 units. 

Tata Motors reported a 10 per cent increase in total domestic sales to 72,997 units in Decmeber 2022. According to a statement from Tata Motors, the business sold 66,307 cars during the same month last year.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported that its dispatches to dealers fell by 3.8 per cent to 10,421 vehicles in December 2022. According to a statement issued by TKM, the company recorded wholesale sales of 10,834 units in December 2022. Total wholesales for the calendar year 2022 increased by 23 per cent to 1,60,357 units from 1,30,768 units in 2021.

The company reported that the sales in 2022 were also its largest wholesales in the preceding ten years, surpassing the previous record of 1,72,241 units set in 2012.
