About 3km away from Orchha, near the Chaar Dwar Temple, is a soothing little farmstay that gives you access to the town as well as offers you a hideaway from the bustle. A couple of kilometres from the famous Lakshmi Narayan Mandir, Faagun Haveli is set among rustic fields in the village of Gundrai. Established in 2015, the 10-roomed farmhouse is owned by Mayuri Dongre.
If I were to describe Faagun Haveli in one word, it would be: simple. The two-storied house stands around a central courtyard, and the reception area is done up with aesthetic art. The rooms, simple and comfortable, do the basic things right. An eco-conscious property, the kitchen uses vegetables and fruits from the gardens, in season. The meals are not fussy, and best ordered a little in advance.
The place is run and managed by staff from nearby areas. The garden blooms with a profusion of roses and other flowers, and hosts a great number of avian visitors. Incidentally, pets are welcome at Faagun Haveli, and what is more, they are not charged – which is just what is needed far as pet owners are concerned. Plenty of space to run around and plenty of fresh air too. Among other activities are leisurely walks to the village, bicycle rides, some birding and lots of reading… just pencil in a lot of slow travel.
