INTERVIEW

Paul Abraham

COO, IndusInd Bank

Making the right social and financial investment is key to a successful intervention. He effectively blends both in giving direction to CSR activities.

How does IndusInd Bank view its CSR initiatives?

At IndusInd Bank, we are committed to running our business in a way that generates sustainable value for our customers, clients, shareholders and employees. We also recognise that we have the opportunity to address various environmental and social challenges that are beyond our business related activities in geographies that we operate in. Therefore, through our several CSR initiatives, we work towards social upliftment and environmental conservation. In a bid to encourage environmental conservation and restoration, we have undertaken significant initiatives in the areas of Water Stewardship, Afforestation, Waste Management and Renewable Energy. Of these, Water Stewardship is an area of high-priority for us and has also been branded as ‘IndusInd Bank Jal Jeevan’. IndusInd Bank’s social upliftment programmes aim to benefit the weaker sections of society, especially the poor, women, children and specially challenged individuals Education, Healthcare, Sports and Livelihood (primarily through Skill Development) are some of the areas that the Bank has been focussing on. The Bank aims to make all its CSR initiatives sustainable through long-term engagements with the community and other stakeholders.

What are the critical aspects that the company's CSR initiatives aims to achieve?

Be it our social or environmental initiatives, all our CSR programmes impact people. We, as the Bank’s CSR team, spend a considerable amount of time and effort in monitoring and evaluating the true potential of each of our initiatives. We want to empower the weak and vulnerable, whether it is through initiatives that provide support for education to the underprivileged, or affordable primary healthcare for the rural poor or providing skill development for livelihood creation to young adults.
In the long run, our initiatives for environment conservation will also benefit local communities that are facing the repercussions of environmental degradation. For instance, our watershed development programme will benefit distressed farming communities, while our programmes for the restoration of water bodies will make more water available to local residents.

IndusInd Bank is the only Bank in the country that has a dedicated Sports vertical. We promote the culture of sports and fitness.

IndusInd Bank has undertaken a pioneering initiative in promoting sports for the Blind. Can you kindly share any such new initiative in the pipeline?

IndusInd Bank is the only Bank in the country that has a dedicated Sports vertical which is a firstof- its-kind non-banking function within the organisation. Internally, we promote the culture of sports and fitness, especially by encouraging employees to participate in marathons across the country.
Externally, as a part of our CSR initiatives, we promote inclusion in sports. We do this by supporting sports for women and specially challenged individuals. We are the main sponsors of the Indian Cricket Team for the Blind. This particular initiative is done under the IndusInd Blind Cricket Programme. Similarly, in partnership with Go Sports we support para athletes through the IndusInd Para Champions Programme.
Additionally, we provide a platform for budding women athletes who hail from humble backgrounds to strive for international sporting excellence through our IndusInd Girl Power Programme. For this, we have partnered with JSW Foundation's Inspire Institute of Sports to nurture these athletes in a residential programme and prepare them for noted tournaments like the Olympics and World Championships.
Currently, we are evaluating more such programmes that are aligned to our deep association with Sports.

Case Study 1

Seema Soni (in saree in front) from Naya Basera, Bhopal. Legal Literacy has given us the confidence to take up not only issues concerning me but also other women in distress.

Case Study 2

After the training programme, my curiosity led to awareness about other legal rights for my community and me. Once, I wanted to inform others in the community that we had legal rights to ask the authorities to clean the sewage that was overflowing since a week. I used this old method of beating the plate with a spoon to make the right noise. (Anita with plate)
