In a recent study, the Pew Research Foundation, a ‘fact tank’ based in Washington, has said that India accounts for the largest immigrant population across the globe. In an earlier study, the institute had said that Hindus from the country formed the largest proportion of uneducated people in the world.

Ahead of the International Migrants Day, the foundation released statistics concurrent with 2015 on Wednesday, saying that India is the top country of origin of international migrants, with 15.6 million Indians living abroad. The research added that the migrant population across the world accounted for 3.3% of the total population.

In a recent study, the foundation also said that Hindus still have the lowest educational attainment levels of any major religious group across the world in a table topped by the Jews.

The average schooling period across the world is about 5.6 years whereas only 41 percent of Hindus are said to have formal education of any kind.

The report also noted that those Hindus living outside of the Asia-Pacific region tended to be one of the most educated groups in the countries they inhabited. A Pew study from November this year also says that Hindus in the US are its most educated religious group with 77 percent of them having a college degree whereas the Jews stood at 59 percent.

The recent study however says that the number of Indians living in the Gulf countries has been increasing substantially from 2 million in 1990 to more than eight million in 2015

“Most have migrated for economic opportunities in these oil-rich countries,” it added.

Authored by Philip Connor, the report said if all the world’s international migrants (people living in a country that is different from their country or territory of birth) lived in a single country, it would be the world's fifth largest, with around 244 million people.
