India were forced to toil hard by England captain Joe Root (180 not out), who scored his 22nd ton, on Day 3 of the second Test match at Lord's, London. But the visitors ended the day trailing only 27 runs with two days left in the fascinating match. Resuming at the overnight score of 119/3, England managed 391 all out at the close of play on Saturday. For India, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj got three wickets each on the day. Root, who has a penchant of punishing Indian bowlers, held the England innings together with an unbeaten 321-ball knock. He first stitched an 85-run stand with the other overnight batsman, Rory Burns (49), then added 121 with Jonny Bairstow (57). Then came two fifty-run stands, 54 with Jos Buttler (23) and 58 with Moeen Ali (27). Mark Wood's run out towards the end of the day gave India a chance to wrap up the England innings, but James Anderson survived some anxious moments and frustrated India. Then came Mohammed Shami, who wrapped up the innings by removing Anderson. The day also witnessed KL Rahul becoming a target of English fans.
