The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice on a petition by a trangender candidate seeking creation of a "third category" for a job with Air India.
The petitioner, Shanavi Ponnusamy, had earlier appeared and then cleared the examnination conducted by the said organisation for the poition in its cabin crew. She could not, however, join the same after aviation ministry allegedly said that "there was no category to include her."
The petition was heard by a Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, which proceeded to issue notice to Air India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, reported Bar & Bench.

Ponnusamy, an Engineering graduate, had worked with Sutherland and Air India Customer Support before she underwent a sex change operation, the report added.
"The petitioner has taken four attempts so far but unfortunately she has not been shortlisted for the post in question even though fared well in the tests conducted," reads the filed petition.
She approached the apex court after she came to know the reason for denial, since vacancies in the cabin crew are earmarked only for women.
In her petition, she also said that she was "forced" to sit under female category. Air India later told her that she would be called in future as and when they create a category for her, she stated in her petition.
