Re-Polling At 38 Srinagar Booths: Separatists Again Call For Poll Boycott

As the re-polling will take place at the 38 polling stations in Budgam on Thursday, the separatist leaders have asked people to boycott polls.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) J&K, Shantmanu, however, said that adequate arrangements of security have been made for re-polling at 38 polling stations.

According to the sources for each polling station, a police officer of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) rank will be in-charge and the Superintendent of Police will be in-charge of five polling booths. The number of police personnel and the paramilitary forces guarding the polling booths has been also increased, the sources said.

The separatist leaders, Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq  and Mohammad Yasin Malik in joint statement, issued here, have called for the shutdown in poll-bound areas on April 13. “We hope people will reject this drama once again and boycott these elections with same spirit as witnessed on April 9,” they said. They said re-polling was announced with motive to increase the voting percentage.

On Sunday April 9, Srinagar constituency witnessed 7.14 percent voting lowest in the electoral history of the constituency as eight people were killed in the firing opened by the forces on the protesters. As the protesters attacked several polling booths on Sunday, the ECI has announced re-polling at 38 stations.
