The Puducherry government today announced a scheme to provide monthly stipend of Rs 3,000 to every new advocate enrolling with the bar council of the Union Territory in order to help them stabilise themselves in the profession.

Speaking to reporters here, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said there was a plea from the Puducherry State Bar Association that young lawyers entering the profession be paid monthly assistance.

"Conceding the plea, the government has now evolved a scheme to provide Rs 3000 every month for young advocates.. This assistance would be available to the new entrants for a period of three years to start with."

"The assistance is to enable the young lawyers to stabilise themselves in the profession," he said.

Initially, the government would earmark, from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a sum of Rs 9 lakhs to the Welfare Fund of advocates here, he added.

Stating that another scheme to provide solatium to the bereaved families of advocates has been evolved, Narayanasamy said a sum of Rs 20 lakhs would be provided to the Welfare Fund of Advocates for the same.

On operation of air services, he said negotiations were on with private players to operate flight services linking Puducherry with Tirupati, Coimbatore, Kochi and Bangalore.

The local sea port would go on stream shortly to handle cargo containers from Chennai Port and for onward shipment, he added.
