People hailing a cab to Gurgaon might face some hitches as cab drivershave refused to pay Rs 100 entry fee introduced by the Haryana government. Driver's union- Sarvodaya- is also set to stage a protestagainst this new motor tax.

The Hindustan Times reports that cabbies regular on this route are angryat the new rule put in place from April 1. The drivers' association not only allege the new rules being 'expensive', but they also feel that it's a waste of time and money to stand in multiple queues.

"Drivers have to stand in queues for nearly an hour before they can pay their taxes. When we had protested against app-based aggregators earlier this year, the Haryana government had intervened and gave us reassurance that driver’s demands will be fulfilled and ease their lives. However, the new tax collection system has only added to the burden," Sarvodaya Drivers Association's president was quoted as saying to the newspaper.

The new tax model has replaced the earlier road tax of Rs 950 which was paid to the Regional Transport Authority every three months. The new tax has to be paid upon entry at the border, leading to long queues and inconvenience, said the report.

The Times of India reported that "For a long time, cab owners were flouting Supreme Court norms by plying in NCR on All India Tourist Vehicle Permit (AITVP), instead of an NCR taxi permit, to save taxes and registration fees," said Virender Lather, additional transport commissioner, Haryana. Nearly 12,000 Gurgaon-based taxis are currently operating in the NCR under AITVP, but only five Gurgaon-based cabs have been issued the NCR taxi permit in the past six months.
