The Indian Army is going to roll out a strict action plan from June to ensure fitness of personnel by stopping foreign postings, promotions and distinguised awards of soldiers who are above 10 per cent of their ideal body weight.

The Army headquarter has issued instructions to all units across the country to maintain record of soldiers who are overweight, reported The Economic Times.

A set of instructions accessed by the newspaper reveals that senior officers have been asked to conduct spot checks, surprise visits and scrutinize records "if the individual appears to be obese".

Indian Army's non combat streams of the army including the army medical corps, defence security corps and the Territorial Army will also come under the purview of the new set of rules.

However, the soldiers who have received wounds in combats, and those who are medically declared as having heavy muscle or bone density will be exempted from the rule.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, several measures were announced last year to empower the Command channel for detecting and controlling cases of obesity in their respective Commands.

Under the new rule, the obese soldiers will not be allowed to be a part of any award functions anymore.
