Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Saturday hit out at the BJP over the controversial references to his father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in the web series, Sacred Games.

“My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that,” Rahul tweeted, adding, “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed & controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right.”

Earlier on Wednesday, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya had added fuel to the controversy by posting a clip on Twitter from the recently premiered series, which is based on a book by Vikram Chandra. The clip had actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who plays one of the lead characters of the series, speaking about how Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi’s death and got embroiled in the Bofors scandal.

“This is what seems to have irked the Congress, their own record on freedom of expression notwithstanding,” Malviya had tweeted while sharing the clip from the series, referring to a Congress activist’s complaint against Siddiqui and the producers of "Sacred Games."

In his complaint to the police, the Congress-man had alleged that Siddiqui, online platform Netflix and "Sacred Games" producers were "jointly responsible" for abusing Rajiv Gandhi on the show.

A police officer had then said that they were looking into the matter.

"Sacred Games", starring Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, tells the story of a police officer who attempts to thwart a terrorist attack in Mumbai.
