Rumours of the discovery of a 'Mowgli girl' doing the rounds are baseless, says cop who rescued the 11-year-old girl two and a half months ago from  the jungles of Katerniaghat.

According to a report by the Indian Express, the Head Constable Sarvajeet Yadav refuted rumours, clarifying that the girl was not naked and was not moving on all fours when found. Contrary to reports, there were no monkeys and she wasn't using her hands to walk.

The girl is now named Ehsas by the president of the NGO that runs the Lucknow hospital where she was shifted on Saturday, the report added.

Quoting the Head Constable, the report says “We believe she was abandoned by her parents, who could not take care of her because of her mental condition.” The patrol team took her to the Motipur police station." Motipur SHO Ram Avtar Yadav said, “We are 100 per cent sure she had not been by the road for more than 24 hours.”

The girl was reportedly  moving around on her haunches when found.  She was wearing a frock and knickers. She was very weak and tried to move away on seeing her rescuers but contrary to rife speculations, there were no monkeys.

Media reports had earlier claimed that the girl had been 'living with monkeys' for months and even behaved like one. Police officer Dinesh Tripathi reportedly told the Associated Press that "the girl was naked and was very comfortable in the company of monkeys. When they tried to rescue the girl, they were chased away by the monkeys,”
