While rejecting a claim by a person who furnished an Aadhaar card as an identification proof, the Calcutta High Court has reportedly said that Aadhar is not a proof of Indian citizenship.

According to a report on LiveLaw, Justice Joymalya Bagchi was considering a bail plea of a woman booked under the Indian Foreigners Act. The woman had argued that she was an Indian citizen and that an Aadhar card had been provided to her keeping in mind her long tenure in the country.

The report adds that the court referred to the Aadhar Act of 2016 and said that the card by itself is not a proof of citizenship or domicile. The court is said to have added that a letter issued by a local body as residence-proof also does not confer citizenship on the person concerned.

The court then reportedly rejected the bail application and said that material collected during investigation revealed that the woman was a foreign national.
