On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir government rolled out a “guest control order” to impose restrictions on marriages, social and government functions.

The new order will now restrict the number of guests to 500, who will be part of the marriage ceremony at the bride's place while those to be part of the event at the groom's place will be restricted to 400.

A maximum number of 100 guests can be part of an engagement ceremony.

Choudhary Zulfkar Ali, Minister for Consumer Affairs, has said that the move will curb the wastage at social, government and private gatherings. The order was issued after the minister's department received complaints, both from civil as well as social organizations about “injudicious use of essential commodities and exuberant expenditures made in public and private functions.”

Taking cognizance of the complaints, the minister said that there will be a ban on sending dry fruits, sweet packets with invitation cards to relatives, friends and guests.

The state government has given 40 days time for its implementation that will come to effect from April 1. The deputy commissioners have been asked to ensure that the new rules are properly followed.

"Violators will not be excused," minister Zulfikar Ali said.

Also, the government will soon come up with a legislation to ensure punishments for the violators, the minister informed.

The minister said there will be ban on use of amplifiers, loudspeakers and firecrackers. The government has also asked to restrict number of food stalls to seven each for non-vegetarian and vegetarian dishes, and two stalls for sweets and fruits.
