Is Smart-Tweeter Rajinikanth Getting Credit For A Statement He Never Made On Mersal?

Known for being ambiguous about his political affiliations, Tamil superstar Rajnikanth has always kept his cards close to his chest.

Amid the ambivalence over whether he would back the nascent BJP in Tamil Nadu, Rajinikanth has let out another mystery tweet, commenting on the controversy surrounding the scenes in Mersal.

“Important topic addressed... Well done !!! Congratulations team #Mersal,” he tweeted.

On Saturday, facing flak from the Tamil Nadu BJP over dialogues in "Mersal" allegedly flaying the GST, the film production house today said if needed, it would delete scenes that have caused "misunderstanding", even as the Congress slammed the saffron party for demanding cuts.

The producers also said that the BJP's opposition to some dialogues in Vijay-starrer "Mersal" was "just" from its own perspective.

For someone who would have been looking up to the Thailavar to back the film and the freedom to criticize the government, in this case over GST (however unnecessarily), would’ve read this as: ‘Important issue of GST addressed by the film. Well Done. Congratulations team #Mersal’.  This way it reads is as if Rajini is backing the filmmakers in the controversy.

However, the same one-liner could be read another way: ‘Important issue raised by the BJP has been addressed by makers of Mersal.  Well Done. Congratulations team #Mersal for raking in the money.’

This would probably be the harsher one of the two, but totally explicable given how Rajini is prone to giving everyone the runaround.  Majority of the media perceived Rajinikanth’s tweet to be critical of GST.

Chennai-based journalist Arun Janardhanan explained in a tweet, “Both Rajini and Kamal are clever tweeters. They get credit for things they never said, opinions they never had or stands they never took”.

In March this year, Rajini tweeted: “My support is for no one in the coming elections.”

Then in May, Rajinikanth announced that he would entertain the possibility of joining politics, getting rumour mills chattering. The BJP said it welcomed the statement as it would change the political mood in the state which has been uncertain since the death of former CM Jayalalithaa, also someone Rajini had run-ins with. The Congress’ Tom Vadakkan said that “God is willing and we want to see Rajinikanth in politics.”

Even as recently as October 3, Rajini’s wife, Lata, was quoted saying: “He will take the decision and we will accept and respect whatever decision he takes.”

People have had bated breath for some time now.
