Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Tuesday came down heavily on Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for repeatedly targetting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Addressing the two leaders in separate tweets, hours after Priyanka called Modi arrogant at an election rally, Swaraj reminded the Congress general secretary of the 2013 incident when Rahul Gandhi had humiliated former prime minister Manmohan Singh by tearing an ordinance passed by his Cabinet. "Look, who is talking," she added.

“They (the BJP leaders) try to divert the country’s attention in order to hide their failures. This country has never forgiven ‘ahankaar’ (ego). History is proof of this, the Mahabharat is also proof of this,” she said.

Mamata Banerjee, who has refused to take calls from the PMO, had said that she would now only talk to the new prime minister and not the "expiry PM."

Swaraj said that Mamata had crossed all limits. "You are the chief minister of a state and Narendra Modi is the prime minister," she said she would like to quote two lines by Bashir Badr.

Mamata and Modi have been at loggerheads throughout this election campaign, targetting each other over a variety of issues.

Addressing a rally in Santuri, Banerjee on Tuesday said, "Modi needs a slap of democracy for saying that Mamata's party is of tolabaaz (extortionists)." She further called him a "lying PM".
