The electoral battle to win the Lok Sabha elections is in full swing with all the political parties aggressively campaigning across the country. The 2019 election will see Prime Minister Narendra Modi making a bid to win a second term in the office while the Opposition will try to prevent the PM and BJP from coming to power again.

The exercise is the largest in the world where more than 8000 contestants will fight for 543 seats of the lower house of the parliament and 10 lakh polling stations and 1.1 million electronic voting machines (EVMs) will facilitate the process. Almost 8,000 contestants will fight for 543 seats as almost 900 million voters will exercise their franchise to elect members to the 17th Lok Sabha.

 - Suspended Aam Aadmi Party leader from Punjab, Harinder Singh Khalsa joins Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Union Minister Arun Jaitley.

Congress manifesto, drafted by a party panel headed by former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, is expected to make some "big ticket announcements" on the social sector and on ways to bolster micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME). 

A large number of these ideas are expected to find resonance in the manifesto to be released at the Congress headquarters situated at 24, Akbar Road on April 2. 

- In a setback to the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), its outgoing MP A.P. Jithender Reddy on Wednesday joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after he was denied ticket for next month's elections.

- West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday called Congress chief Rahul Gandhi "a kid" while dismissing his allegations against her government.

Gandhi had alleged that nothing has changed in Bengal as there has been no development in the state under Banerjee.

- The Election Commission Wednesday set up a committee under a deputy election commissioner to examine the matter related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation "in the light of the Model Code of Conduct" which is in force for Lok Sabha polls.
