The last rites of Goa Chief Minister and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who died on Sunday after suffering from pancreatic cancer for over a year, were held with full military and state honours at the Miramar beach on Monday evening.

Thousands of supporters and BJP workers accompanied the funeral cortege from the Kala Academy Arts and Cultural Centre, where the remains had been kept throughout the day for the public to pay last respects to the nearby Miramar beach.

The mortal remains of Parrikar, wrapped in the national tri-colour, were placed on a pyre amid a 21 gun salute at the beach and his elder son Utpal Parrikar consigned it to flames.

Parrikar, 63, is survived by two sons, two daughter in-laws and a grandson.

The Goa Tourism Department on Monday cancelled the traditional Shigmo festivities, scheduled to be held from March 21.

State Tourism Director Sanjiv Gadkar said the festivities were cancelled as a mark of respect and for the observance of mourning which has been declared due to the demise of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

Shigmo is a week-long pre-Holi festivity celebrated by Hindus, whose style of celebration is similar to a carnival and is considered a big draw for tourists visiting the coastal state.


The Haryana government declared a one-day state mourning on Monday as a mark of respect to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.

"The State government has decided to observe a one-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary. The national flag will fly at half-mast on March 18," an order issued by Haryana Chief Secretary's office said.

Even as the hunt for new CM continues in Goa, a delegation of Congress has reached the Raj Bhavan to stake claim to the government, the third time in three days.

Claiming that the Congress is the "single-largest party" in Goa, the party asked Governor Mridula Sinha to "dismiss the ruling BJP."

"We do not have an appointment, because she is refusing to give us time. But despite that, we have arrived here to meet the Governor to stake our claim. It is our right as a single largest party in the Goa assembly," Goa Congress chief Chandrakant Kavlekar said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that Parrikar was known for its honesty and simplicity and he served Indian and the state of Goa with great diligence.

"Deeply saddened and pained by the demise of my dear friend & Chief Minister of Goa, Shri Manohar Parrikar. He was known for his honesty, integrity and simplicity. He served the nation and the state of Goa with great diligence. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family," Singh said.

Parrikar to be accorded state funeral with full military honours at Miramar beach

MHA Joint Secretary S K Shahi, in an order issued on Sunday, said the Ministry of Defence is requested to make arrangements for state funeral with full military honours.

"It has been decided by the government that state funeral will be accorded to the departed dignitary," Shahi has said in the circular.

An official release from the CMO said his mortal remains will be kept at the BJP head office in Panaji for an hour from 9.30 am, after which they will be taken to Kala Academy for people to pay their last respects. The funeral procession to Miramar will start at 4 pm, and theAntim Kriya will be performed at 5 pm.

The Union Cabinet will meet at 10 am today to condole the demise of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. A two-minute would be observed in his memory and a resolution would also be passed hailing Parrikar's contribution as a public figure, official sources said.


Mortal remains of Manohar Parrikar would be kept at state BJP office from 9.30 am to 10.30 am.

While there is no clarity as to who will be Manohar Parrikar’s successor, the swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister is slated at around 9.30am on Monday, deputy speaker Michael Lobo said.

- Parrikar was the first IITian to head a state as a Chief Minister and was recognised for his work across party lines.

- President Ram Nath Kovind described Parrikar as "an epitome of integrity and dedication in public life" and said, "his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten."
