Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla on Saturday announced the end of the violent agitation by the community to demand reservation in jobs and educational institutions, and requested that the road and rail blockades across Rajasthan be removed immediately.

The statement by Bainsla came as the agitation by the Gujjar community entered the ninth day.

The Gujjars had continued to blockade railway tracks and highways in Rajasthan despite the Ashok Gehlot government granting 5 per cent reservation to the community as well as four other communities.

The agitators squatted on the railway tracks forcing the cancellation of several trains during the past eight days.

State Tourism Minister Vishvendra Singh and representatives of the Gujjar community had held talks to end the deadlock. However, the talks remained inconclusive with the Gujjar leaders demanding written assurance from the government that necessary steps would be taken if their demands face legal hurdles.

The Rajasthan Assembly had on February 13 passed a Bill giving a five per cent quota in government jobs and educational institutes to the agitating Gujjars and four other communities.
