Senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram on Sunday pointed out the huge difference between the number of positive coronavirus cases put out by different states, the Indian Council of Medical Research and the Union Health Ministry.

"Usually, States’ total is the highest, followed by ICMR number, followed by the Ministry of health and Welfare’s number. Today, it is the other way around," he wrote in a tweet.

"I rely on a dashboard jointly issued by Ministry of Health and ICMR. The difference between the 18 April dashboard number and the ICMR number is surprisingly 1573 cases," Chidambaram said.

He further requested Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and ICMR to put out similar numbers each day.

"Can Ministry of Health and ICMR issue the same number every day by matching their reports with the reports of the states?" he asked.

The total number of Coronavirus cases stood at 15,712 on Sunday, with 507 people succumbing to the disease, according to the Union Health Ministry.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 12,974, while 2,230 people have been cured and discharged, and one had migrated, it said.
