Hyderabad has emerged as the new hub for JEE (Joint Engineering Entrance)coaching replacing Kota in Rajasthan, producing thousands of candidates every year who embark on one of the most sought after journey in the country.

The number of students who come to the southern city has shoot up from a few thousands in the early 2000s to 20,000 currently. Almost 50 percent of the top 10 rankers for the past several years have pursued their coaching in Hyderabad, reported The Times of India.

Six out of  top 10 rankers were from Hyderabad in JEE (advanced) 2016.

However, the contest is pretty close between the two cities-- Hyderabad and Kota.

Dheeraj Kumar Misra, regional director, operations, south zone at Aakash Educational Services Pvt Ltd, told the newspaper,"The fascination among students in Telangana and AP for JEE has only increased over the years. It is only in the last one decade that there has been a sudden rise in the number of takers. The coaching industry has only catered to the increasing demand."

In 2016, there were as many as 3,734 students who made into the IITs were from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, while 1,610 from Rajasthan.

According to a Deccan Chronicle report, in 2014, at least 20 per cent of all students getting admissions to various IITs in the country were from the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

There were 18,946 students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana out of the 1.26 lakh students who passed the IIT JEE (Mains). Nearly 4,975 students out of them qualified in the advanced exam earning eligibility to participate in the counselling procedure, the report adds.
