The Centre has announced cash awards to the best breeds of cows in the country. It has asked all states to send in nominations of individual farmers, gaushalas or cow shelters, and breeders’ societies by March 31

The step aims at developing and conserving Indian cow breeds which has been neglected. In total, 30 awards of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 1 lakh will be distributed in the month of November on National Milk Day, reported The Economic Times.

Devendra Chaudhary, the secretary of department of animal husbandry and fisheries, told the newspaper that they were planning to select 500 “high productive” bulls and use advanced reproduction techniques with select indigenous cows to produce “7,000 super elite cows” so that 5 million indigenous cattle can be upgraded every year.

This is not the first time when the Centre has done something for improving the cow breeds in the country.

In February, Union Minister Birender Singh had informed that the Centre is working on a programme under which four different breeds of cow will be cross-bred to create a new variety that will prove to be a boon for cattle-rearers.

Last year, govt had announced setting up of a training centre under the Rastriya Gokul Mission in a veterinary university for the upgradation of Hariyana and Shahiwal breed.

Apart from developing good variety of bulls and setting up of a semen bank,it would also work for the upgradation of Gaushalas of Brijbhumi.
