Go With The Flow: Things To Do Along The River
info_icon
  • Walk north from Majnu ka Tila gurudwara to the Aruna Nagar Tibetan colony for the momos.
  • Visit the Chandgi Ram Akhara opposite Metcalf House at dawn and watch the wrestlers practice their moves.
  • Take a boat from Jamuna Bazaar (near Hanuman mandir, ISBT) to feed the migratory birds.
  • Row across to the fields of flowers and vegetables in the middle of the river.
  • Walk south from Loha Pul, visit the Salimgarh fort (once a river island) with its freedom fighters’ museum (asi.nic.in/asi_museums_ delhi_salimgarh.asp).
  • Drive up behind the electric crematorium next to Kisan Ghat and go birdwatching along the bund to Rajghat. For information on birdwatching trips and more along the river, see delhibird.net.
  • Walk down to the river from the ITO bridge and see if you can spot where the elephants live (they’ve been served an eviction notice and the sign ‘yahaan hathi rehte hain’ will soon be only a fond memory).
  • Explore the archaeological digs behind Humayun’s tomb which have excavated a grand, arcaded stone jetty that joined the tomb to the Neela Gumbad, once on a river island. Like Lucknow, Delhi’s economic and social life too was once oriented towards the river.
