In a shocking incident, a dead rat was found floating in sambhar served to cleaning staffers of Sri Ram Mandir ward in Bengaluru to which the mayor G Padmavathi responded by saying it was a small rodent.

According to a report by The Times of India, the matter was brought to notice on Wednesday during the BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) council meet after the workers complained to their corporator Deepa Nagesh.

"On finding the rat, the pourakarmikas contacted me. I alerted the officials immediately, but nobody bothered to visit the centre where the incident took place," Deepa Nagesh told the newspaper.

The mayor said that the rat could not have got into the sambar at the cooking stage, but while the food was being transported. He added that the officials will look into the matter.

Corporator Deepa's responded to the incident and said "How does the size of the rat matter when it's spotted in food? The mayor didn't let me speak till the end of the meeting," the TOI report added.

Quoting another supporter of corporator, the report says that this is not the first such incident. A month ago a dead rat was found in the vessel where lentil rice is stored.

However, the worst sufferers of negligence while cooking and transporting food are school children who are served mid-day meal across many schools in the country.

While there have been multiple reports of unhygienic food being served to school children have come to light, recently, nine students from a Delhi government school fell sick after consuming food in which a dead rat was found. It was part of their mid-day meal served to them. All of them were admitted to hospital, reported Hindustan Times.
