Rain washed out the the first one-day international between India and SouthAfrica at the Wanderers without a single ball being bowled.

The weather, true to predictions, played a cat and mouse game and heavyintermittent showers swept the Wanderers for much of the day after which umpiresBilly Doctrove and Brian Jerling called off the match at around 10 pm IST (6 pmlocal time).

There were couple of brief moments when it appeared that the day and nightgame might start after the umpires privately suggested that the match could be a39-over affair. However, the idea had to be abandoned as fresh showers set in.

There is no reserve day in this match and the second game of the five-matchseries is scheduled at Kingsmead, Durban, on Wednesday.

India's tour had earlier started on a dismal note with a 37-run loss in theirwarm-up match against South Africa A.

For India, it is the third instance that rains have ruined their series inlast few months.

First their tri-series, involving South Africa and Sri Lanka, was washed outin Sri Lanka and then some of the matches were abandoned due to rain in the DLFCup in Malaysia
