Three soldiers, one civilian woman were killed and another five injured on early Thursday morning after militants opened fired at a patrolling party of 44 Rashtriya Rifles at Mulu Chitragam area in Shopian, around 70 km south of Srinagar.

A Srinagar based police spokesman said following an information about presence of militants a cordon and search operation was carried out at Kungnoo village in Shopian. The operation was carried out by 44 RR and the police. He said the operation was concluded without any arrest or recovery.

He said while returning from Kungnoo, the operation party  was attacked by unknown militants at Mulu Chitragam  at about 2 a.m. resulting in injuries  to six army personnel including two officers of whom three succumbed to their injuries.

 “One lady Mst Taja wife of Ghulam Mohammed Mir of Mulu, who was hit by a stray bullet inside her house during the cross fire also succumbed to her injuries,” the police spokesman said.
