The 2018 Maruti Suzuki Ciaz facelift retains its competitive price tag despite receiving multiple new features and a new 1.5-litre petrol engine. The petrol engine is bigger in capacity compared to the 1.2-litre unit in the older model and is paired with a mild-hybrid system. It is not only more powerful but offers better fuel efficiency as well. The Ciaz’s prices start at Rs 8.19 lakh while the top-spec variant can be had for Rs 10.97 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Several of its variants clash with the Hyundai Verna’s on the price chart. We find out which variant of the two sedans offers the best bang for your buck.

Maruti Ciaz Sigma vs Hyundai Verna E (Petrol)

Price Difference: Ciaz is more expensive by Rs 30,000

Common features: Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, manual day/night IRVM, ISOFIX, central locking, electrically adjustable body-coloured ORVMs, steel wheels with covers, keyless entry, all power windows with driver side auto and anti-pinch function, tilt steering and manual AC.

What does the Ciaz Sigma get over the Verna E: Rear defogger, rear parking sensors, speed alert system, halogen projector headlamps, glass antenna, front center armrest, 4.2-inch colour MID (petrol only), accessory socket at front and rear and rear AC vents, audio with CD player, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity with speakers and steering integrated controls.

What does the Verna E get over Ciaz Sigma: Cooled glove box and clutch lock.

Takeaway

The Maruti is the more expensive car here but it is also better equipped. The Ciaz’ roomier backseat and availability of rear AC vents right from the base variant gives it an edge over the Verna for those who prefer the backseat and are chauffeur-driven.

However, for those who drive themselves, the important features that the Ciaz gets but the Verna doesn’t are audio system, rear defogger, rear parking sensors and front armrest. Apart from the rear defogger, the others can be easily retrofitted in the Verna post purchase and should cost under Rs 30,000.

So, pick the Ciaz if you’re chauffeur-driven or need a more comfortable backseat for your family. If you just want the most affordable of these two mid-size sedans and don’t care much about the said features, then the Verna will suit your needs just fine.

Price Difference: Verna is Rs 39,000 expensive

Common Features over the previous variants: Rear parking sensors, speed-sensing door locks, front fog lamps, height-adjustable driver’s seat, climate control, cruise control, front and rearcentre armrest with storage and cup holders respectively, sunglass holder, audio system with front and rear speakers, USB, AUX connectivity and steering mounted controls, rear AC vents, USB charger at rear and front and cruise control.

What does the Ciaz Delta get over the Verna EX: Alloy wheels.

What does the Verna EX get over Ciaz Delta: Rear parking camera, automatic headlamps, 5-inch touchscreen system with remote control.

Takeaway

The Verna comes across as the more expensive option but gets added features. Except the parking camera, all other features are meant to lift the premium quotient. Since one can get a touchscreen audio system with rear parking camera fitted in the Ciaz at a lower cost, it’s the Ciaz that turns out to be the more value pick here.

Price difference: Verna is Rs 8,000 expensive.

Common Features over previous variants: Auto-dimming IRVM, daytime running lamps, LED tail lamps, electric folding ORVM and reverse parking camera.

Features in Ciaz over Verna: LED headlamps, chrome door handles, rear adjustable headrests, push start/stop button and rear sunshade.

Features in Verna over Ciaz: Cornering lamps, 7-inch touchscreen unit with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink.

Takeaway

Getting cornering lamps fitted on the Ciaz may not be possible but Maruti does offer touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto under MGA. While getting that fitted would make the Ciaz more expensive than the Verna by about Rs 20,000, it would still be a more rounded package considering the extra features it offers over the Verna otherwise.

Features in Ciaz over Verna: LED fog lamps, LED headlamps with DRLs, chrome door handles, rear adjustable headrests, electrically folding ORVM, push start/stop button, sunglass holder, rear sunshade, electronic stability control with hill hold assist.

Takeaway: Thanks to the sheer number of its additional features, the Ciaz is our pick. For those who can’t live without a touchscreen infotainment system, it’s better to get one fitted from MGA post purchase. That would make the Ciaz slightly more expensive than the Verna but it would be a more rounded package for sure.
