What happens when the election results are tied in India?

A tie in votes is broken by a draw of lots. According to Section 102 of The Representation of the People Act 1951 if two candidates get an equal number of votes in a poll, and an extra vote will be the decider. Then the Returning Officer will decide the winner through a draw of lots. In February 2017, two candidates fighting elections to Ward 220 in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation received the same number of votes. The Shiv Sena candidate was initially declared winner, with a victory margin of three votes. But the BJP candidate demanded a recount. Both candidates ended up with a tie. So, a lottery was held to pick the winner. The seat finally went to the BJP candidate!
