"We have more than adequate notes of Rs 2,000 in the system with over 35 per cent of notes by value in circulation being of Rs 2,000," Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg said.
According to the RBI databank, there were 4.92 billion pieces of Rs 20 note in circulation as on March 31, 2016. The number more than doubled to about 10 billion pieces by March 2018.
The coin, which is expected to be launched soon, will carry Vajpayee's name, birth and death years –1924 and 2018– inscribed in Devnagari as well as in English.
Referring to non-performing assets in the banking sector, Gurumurthy said it was a result of lending driven by excessive flow of foreign exchange during 2004-10 period.
Gandhi alleged that demonetisation was a planned "brutal conspiracy" and a "shrewd scheme" to convert the black money of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "suit-booted friends".
