India beat Zimbabwe by 71 runs in the final game of the Super 12 stage in Group 2. India had ensured their qualification for the semifinal as South Africa lost to the Netherlands. Pakistan won against Bangladesh to book a semifinal berth. India won the toss and elected to bat first. After Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal, KL Rahul extended his stride and gently paced his innings, scoring 51 runs in 35 balls. Suryakumar Yadav came to bat at No.4 and took the MCG by storm, hitting the ball in every area of the ground. Yadav was unbeaten at 61 off 25 balls, hitting 6 boundaries and 4 sixes, to propel India to 186 in 20 overs. In response to India’s 186, Zimbabwe had a horrendous start, losing two wickets for 2 runs. The Zimbabwe batsmen crumbled like statues of sand as five wickets had been lost for 36 runs. Richard Burl’s 35 helped Zimbabwe to get to 115 runs in 17.2 overs. Ravichandran Ashwin picked up three wickets (3/22) whereas, Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami picked up two wickets each. India’s win means they end the Super 12 stage as table toppers in their group and will face England in the semifinal.
