France showed why they are the World Champions and why they need to be feared as the FIFA World Cup 2022 moves towards the closing stages. France took on Poland in the round of 16 and came out as the better team, easing past the Polish defence. It took 44 minutes for France to open their account but they were the more domineering side throughout the first half. Olivier Giroud scored the goal and became France’s record goal scorer, overtaking Thierry Henry. Kylian Mbappe slid the ball to the AC Milan forward and he took the shot on the turn as the ball ended up in the bottom right corner. Mbappe scored France’s second goal in the 74th minute as he was afforded acres of space and eons of time. Ousmane Dembele cut inside from the right flank and passed the ball to Mbappe who was completely unmarked. The PSG attacker took his time and fired the ball in top left corner. Mbappe doubled his goal tally in the 90th minute, scoring a beautiful right footed strike to triple France’s advantage. Robert Lewandowski did score a penalty in the dying stages of stoppage time but it was just a consolation goal.
